THIRTEENTH CENTURY BUDDHA AND LOST TEMPLE EMERGES FROM RESERVOIR

A mysterious head of a Buddha appeared and is thought to belong to an ancient temple.  Archaeologists have started an underwater detection project after villagers found the head of a Buddha statue emerging from the surface of a local reservoir that is 10 meters lower than usual.

Judging from the head design, the statue was carved during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), said Xu Changqing, head of the provincial research institute of archaeology.

The researchers had also found rectangular holes carved on the cliff, obvious marks of architecture, which meant that a temple probally existed there.

According to county records, the reservoir is located on the ruins of the ancient Xiaoshi Township, an important hub for water transport between provinces of Jiangxi and Fujian and also a trade center.

In his sketchbook found with his body it says,  "My death is not in vain ... My death should be the victory for the people, not the interests of any one group. I am returning to the elements of the universe. I do not leave any traces."
